IELTS Test Pattern

  • The IELTS test assesses your abilities in listening, reading, writing and speaking – in less than three hours.
  • There are two types of IELTS: Academic and General Training. Listening and Speaking are the same for both tests, but the subject matter of the Reading and Writing sections differs depending on which test you take.
  • The Listening, Reading and Writing sections of all IELTS tests are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them.
  • The Speaking section, however, can be completed up to a week before or after the other tests. Your test centre will advise.
  • The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
  • Listening The total length of this section is 30 minutes and it is divided into four parts candidates have to answer different types of 40 questions.
  • Reading The reading section comprises of three texts of general interest that deals with issues which are suitable for candidates going to pursue post-graduate or undergraduate program. The total time for this section is 30 minutes and it comprises almost 40 questions.
  • Writing The duration of this section is 60 minutes and comprises of two questions where candidates are expected to write a short essay of a minimum of 250 words. In addition to this, students are given data, table, or diagram which the candidates have to explain in their own words.
  • Speaking The total time of this section varies from 11 to 14 minutes and candidates also have to give a face-to-face interview. With the help of this section, the candidates are checked whether they can communicate effectively in the country where they have applied.

IELTS Syllabus

  • IELTS Academic: IELTS Academic is for candidates who are interested in applying for higher education or professional registration to countries that use English as their fundamental language of communication. The main purpose of the examination is to judge whether a candidate is ready to begin studying or training in the English language. Countries that widely recognize IELTS for studying are US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • IELTS General Training: IELTS General Training is for aspirants who are looking to migrate to New Zealand, Australia, Canada, US, and the UK or applying for secondary education, training programs and work experience in an English-speaking environment. Here the examination focusses on the basic survival skills of a candidate in a broad social and workplace environment.
  • IELTS Speaking This section is like a face to face interview between the test taker and examiner. Total time allotted for IELTS Speaking is 11-14 minutes. Examiners mark the test takers on presence of skills like usage of grammar, accuracy, coherence and fluency, lexical resource and pronunciation. For each criterion, test taker will have a weightage value of 25%.
  • IELTS Reading IELTS Academic Reading: This section consists of 3 reading passages of medium length taken from journals, books, magazines, and newspapers. Writing style of most of these reading excerpts ranging from descriptive, factual, discursive and analytical. In all these passages, test taker has to recognize the purpose, attitude or opinions present in writers behind writing these. IELTS General Training Reading: This section comprises 3 sections. Most of these excerpts are taken from newspapers, books, magazines, guidelines, advertisements, handbooks, and notices. For Task 1, test taker has to write about “social survival”. For Task 2, test taker has to write about “workplace survival” and for Task 3 it is a general reading passage with a little complex structure.
  • IELTS Writing IELTS Academic Writing Test: Test takers must skim and scan the reading passages to find out important facts present within passages. Test takers should be conscious enough to find out every detail available in paragraphs. For Task 1, the test taker gets a minimum of 20 minutes. Every piece of information should be relevant enough to complete a writing task. Test takers should write down all important information given through graphical representation. Word limit to complete Task 1 is 150 words. Similarly for Task 2, test taker gets a minimum time of 40 minutes. Word limit for the 2nd task is 250 words. Examiners mark the test takers on basis of 4-5 criteria like Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Accuracy. To achieve each criterion, the examiner marks 25% of total marks to the test taker.

IELTS Results

  • IELTS or International English Language Testing System is the most popular English language test for international study, migration and work.Candidate will receive only one copy of the Test report form. If the candidate wishes to seek Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) then only he/she will be provided with two copies of IELTS Test Report Form.
  • IELTS Results are declared 13 calendar days after the candidate sits/appears for the examination.
  • The result of IELTS computer delivered test are declared usually within 7 days from the test day.
  • Candidate can have access to the IELTS Result online as well as offline.
  • Online preview of the IELTS Result must not be mistaken as an official confirmation of the candidate's performance.
  • Online:Candidate can preview the result for IELTS after 13 days of appearing for the IELTS exam. A candidate can check his / her score in IELTS exam through the official websites of following organizations: -Brirish council IELTS -IDP IELTS
  • Offline mode: To get IELTS Score offline candidate must wait for the concerned IELTS Exam Centerto post the Test Result Form after 13 days of the commencement of the examination. It is possible that candidate's result might get delayed due to strict quality control procedures. There will be an email confirmation being sent to the candidate in such case scenario.
  • Information required to access IELTS Result: To access IELTS Result, candidate must keep following information in hand: -Candidate will need his / her Identification document number. -To access the result for IELTS exam candidate number provided during examination at the test center will be required. -Date of IELTS exam. -Candidate’s date of birth
  • IELTS Score Validity:Institutions usually don’t accept Test Report Forms that are more than two years old. However, if you’re applying after 2 years from your IELTS test, then you can try proviiding evidence for your efforts regarding actively maintaining or improving your english since you took the test.
